Surrozen Inc. (Nasdaq: SRZN) announced on October 2, 2026, that its Investigational New Drug application for SZN-8141 has become effective, allowing the company to begin clinical development of the experimental treatment for diabetic macular edema.

The FDA milestone permits Surrozen to initiate DUET, a Phase 1b/2a clinical trial expected to dose its first patient during the fourth quarter of 2026. IND clearance allows a drug candidate to enter human testing but does not constitute FDA approval or establish that it is safe or effective.

SZN-8141 is an antibody designed to combine activation of the Frizzled-4-mediated Wnt pathway with inhibition of vascular endothelial growth factor, or VEGF. Surrozen plans to administer the candidate through injections into the eye.

Diabetic macular edema occurs when damaged retinal blood vessels leak fluid into the macula, an area needed for sharp central vision. Existing treatments include anti-VEGF injections intended to reduce abnormal blood-vessel growth and retinal swelling.

“FDA clearance of the SZN-8141 IND marks an important milestone for Surrozen,” CEO Craig Parker said. He added that the company is preparing to initiate DUET and evaluate the candidate in patients with diabetic macular edema.

The trial will begin with an open-label, single-ascending-dose Phase 1b portion involving treatment-naïve and previously treated patients. Investigators will assess safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics and early measures of retinal function and anatomy.

A randomized, double-masked Phase 2a portion is then expected to evaluate two SZN-8141 doses against Vabysmo in approximately 60 treatment-naïve patients. Initial trial data are expected during the second half of 2027.

The IND clearance also satisfies a condition attached to the second closing of Surrozen’s March 2025 private placement. Subject to the agreement’s remaining conditions, the company expects the closing to occur around October 20 and generate approximately US$95.1 million in gross proceeds.

Surrozen reported US$102 million in cash and cash equivalents as of June 30, 2026. It used US$19.9 million in operating cash during the first half of the year and recorded a six-month net loss of US$77.3 million, although that result included substantial non-cash changes in financing-related liabilities. The company has not generated revenue from product sales.

Upcoming Catalysts

  • Expected US$95.1 million private-placement closing around October 20
  • First patient dosing in the DUET trial during the fourth quarter
  • Initial Phase 1b/2a clinical data in the second half of 2027
  • Potential development of SZN-8141 in wet age-related macular degeneration

Confirmed sources include Surrozen’s October 2, 2026 announcement, its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 and publicly available information from the National Eye Institute. Information concerning SZN-8141’s mechanism, preclinical performance and expected development schedule originated primarily from Surrozen and has not been independently validated by Biotech Stocks Daily.

SZN-8141 remains investigational and has not been approved for commercial use. IND clearance permits clinical testing but does not establish safety, efficacy or a favorable regulatory outcome. The candidate has not yet produced human clinical data. The DUET trial may encounter enrollment, safety, manufacturing, regulatory or operational delays, and its results may not support continued development.

Surrozen reported US$102 million in cash and cash equivalents and an accumulated deficit of approximately US$604.6 million as of June 30, 2026. The planned financing remains subject to closing conditions. Its expected securities issuance includes common shares, pre-funded warrants and additional common-stock warrants, creating substantial potential dilution for existing shareholders. Financial figures may have changed since the reporting date.
